1. Your Job Can Disappear Anytime
The era when our parents or grandparents had and kept a guaranteed job for 20 to 30 years in one company or industry is gone. Jobs are no longer guaranteed. Your company can get liquidated. A merger can cause your department to be removed or a massive reduction in staff count. You may get fired or laid off even if you’ve worked in your current company for over a decade. So, the earlier you start your side hustle or side business today, the easier it is for you to gradually grow the business and reap the rewards in future.
2. Automation and AI Will Be Making Some Jobs Obsolete
As someone who has been working on software automation and building artificial intelligence (AI) models, I have seen first hand what the effects of AI will be in the near future. Computers are being programmed to figure out things for themselves in a much faster and less error-prone way.
If your job requires you to analyze multiples of samples of whatever for classification purposes, forget it, once your industry perfects their neural network for that specific task, your job is gone.
Self-driving cars are gradually hitting our roads. When Uber and Taxify appeared in our cities, traditional taxi drivers were hit by the effect. Even software developers are afraid that they are writing AI codes that will take over their own jobs.
A study by McKinsey Global Institute found that up to 800 million global workers will lose their jobs by 2030 and be replaced by robotic automation, a new report from a consultancy has found.
The study of 46 countries and 800 occupations by the McKinsey Global Institute found that up to one-fifth of the global workforce will be affected.
Many large departmental stores now have self-checkouts. No cashiers standing on those registers to chat with you. You just scan your items, swipe your card and boom… your receipt is printed. I noticed some elderly people refusing to use those self-checkouts because they think they are encouraging these businesses to replace humans with robots if they use them. You can only avoid automated systems for a short time. You may like to Meet these Canadians who refuse to use self-checkout because “they kill jobs”.
So, robot-proof your job by starting a side-business today.

Number 3 is the clincher for me. I once advised a friend who had a great job to start a side business, for where? She thought it was gonna be hard. A few months later she lost her job. Now I’m sure she wished she’d chosen the right “hard.”
Thanks Joycie, super post as usual.
Sad to hear about your friend’s case. It is even harder to come up with what business to venture into when one losses a job.
Thanks Kiki.
